HIPAA Complaint Form

AMA Helps Physicians Report Health Plans’ Non-compliance

The American Medical Association (AMA) now offers physicians the opportunity to register their complaints about health plans and other entities not complying with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations. The AMA’s HIPAA Complaint Form (HIPAACF) is designed to collect information from physicians on health plans and other entities’ non-compliance with the provisions of the HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Standards.

The AMA established an information clearinghouse through its online Health Plan Complaint Form (HPCF) for physicians to register complaints about the unfair business practices that they encounter with health plans and third party payers. The HIPAACF will reside on the AMA Web site under Private Sector Advocacy in tandem with the HPCF, and both will be accessible by hitting a "Click and Complain" icon. The web address is www.ama_assn.org/ama/pub/category/6760.html.

Believing that the collated data from the HIPAACF will be extremely useful in identifying geographic and specialty-specific patterns of health plans and third party entities’ non-compliance with HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Standards, the AMA intends to share HIPAA complaint trends with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
